The Most Challenging Race You’ve Never Heard Of

Today I ran the 49er Bypass Run. You’ve probably never heard of it. It’s a small race, in a small town. But it is only about 45-50 minutes outside of Sacramento and it is an amazingly beautiful and challenging race. I first ran it in 2012. The course has changed a bit since then, and had far less participants than the first time I ran it. Which made me really sad. This race is awesome. Super hilly, beautiful views of Amador County…why isn’t anyone running it??!

Maybe it’s too hard, maybe they need to advertise more, maybe it’s because it is the day before Easter…I don’t know. I do know that I am running this race next year and bringing along my peeps!

So how hard is this race? Check out the elevation. I literally said “fuck” out loud multiple times. You know when you run a hill, think you’re at the top, turn the corner and you find more hills!? That was every hill in this race.

But look at these views. Beautiful.

This was the first hill of the race.

Just past this point I had to start walking. I had to walk twice. And still placed 1st in my AG. Goes to show how hard this race was!

Here are some more amazing views of the race.

I talked my friend Sarah & her mom into doing this race with me. They did the 5k & I did the 10k. Sarah’s mom got 1st in her age group & I got first in mine. Yay us!! (repping SRA after the race).

1st place in my age group with a time of 56:37. Not a PR at all, but I think it gives me a better idea of how it will be to run trails. Not that this race was on trails, but elevation was crazy and I had to push my ego aside and walk a little bit. Which I have been told will happen when I start running trails.

ZOOMA shirt, bib and my 1st place AG medal.

This race made me even more excited to start running trails. I can just imagine this will be the kind of views I will have.

Here is the route for today. I really, really encourage you to check out this race. It is small but one of my favorites. Perfect for hill training. Perfect for a challenge.

FYI I drove the course to take pictures after the race on my way back to Sac. It’s just so beautiful I had to show you all!
